Chris Jericho Discusses His Training Regimen on “The Adam Carolla Show”

Chris Jericho, a veteran wrestler with nearly 35 years in the industry, recently appeared on “The Adam Carolla Show” to share insights into his current training and dietary habits. Known for his ability to reinvent himself, Jericho emphasized that his adjustments go beyond just character changes and reflect a significant evolution in his approach to fitness.

Shift in Training Focus

As Jericho has aged, he has moved away from traditional weightlifting. He explained that the importance of how much one can bench press diminishes with age. Instead, he has shifted his focus primarily to kickboxing, which he finds beneficial for both cardio and muscle definition.

“It really is focused on diet now more than anything,” Jericho stated. “I don’t lift weights, per se, anymore cause my joints are getting too messed up. I really enjoy that for a cardio workout.”

Concerns About Weightlifting

Jericho highlighted potential downsides of weightlifting for older athletes, noting that it can become counterproductive due to the strain it places on joints and ligaments. He expressed a clear preference for activities that maintain his fitness without the risks associated with heavy lifting.

“I think it becomes more counterproductive over the years when you’re really straining with those joints and those ligaments,” he said.

Understanding the Risks of Wrestling

Despite having a career largely free from significant injuries, Jericho acknowledges the inherent dangers of professional wrestling. He reiterated the need for athletes to remain aware of their physical condition, stating:

“[Wrestling is] still a contact sport. So you can be as careful as you want, but you still have to be durable and cognizant of where your body is and just stay in the best shape you can.”
